We welcome the opportunity to showcase and sell our beaders' work, and particularly enjoy participating in events that have a eco or social justice theme. And then there's the wonderful world of fashion, and how more and more women are making conscious choices about how they dress and accessorize themselves that have a positive effect in the world!
We use this page to highlight some recent or upcoming events that feature our jewelry.

2010 Washington, DC Green Festival
October 23-24, 2010
Paper to Pearls will be participating in the DC Green Festival for the fourth year this October at the Washington DC Convention Center. Our recycled paper beads represent exactly the type of product the festival promotes, and our participation in this forum for social and economic responsibility allows Paper to Pearls to celebrate the eco-chic, fair trade aspects of our jewelry. The festival is a great event with hundreds of green vendors, outstanding speakers and activities for the entire family. If you're in DC the weekend of the 23rd, do stop by. You can find us at Booth #540.

"Paper Jewellery" Exhibit: Triennale Design Museum, Milan
September 15-October 25, 2009
Paper to Pearls is delighted to be a part of an international artisan paper jewelry museum exhibition in Milan. Four representative pieces of our beaders' work are featured alongside that of 60 of the world's preeminent jewelry artists. The show opened on September 15th and runs through October 25th at Milan's Triennale Design Museum. It will then travel internationally before returning to Italy in the summer of 2010. This is clearly a huge honor for Paper to Pearls as it represents recognition not only for the beauty of the pieces themselves but also for the accomplishments of the women who craft them. "As a jewelry historian, I see the great importance of including Paper to Pearls and the work of its bead-makers in this exhibition," said Bianca Cappello, co-curator of the show. "The significance of the jewelry these women are making and what they are doing in their communities embody the spirit of sustainability, while bringing tremendous value to a simple product like paper. These are the very themes of this show." To see a selection of the jewelry items in the show, visit http://www.triennaledesignmuseum.it/mostre?lang=IT# and click on Gioielli di carta.
2009 Women in Cable Telecommunications Leadership Conference
April 1-2, 2009
Paper to Pearls was honored to be part of WICT’s annual Leadership Conference in a number of ways. Not only was Barbara a speaker on their panel ‘Rarified Air: One of a Kind Leaders’, but WICT asked us to create a special order necklace to commemorate their 30th anniversary: three strands—one for each decade—and in the WICT signature red. And as if that weren't generous enough, WICT also selected us as an ‘empowerment partner’ in recognition of our work with women in war-torn areas. We also received generous donations from WICT and WEtv to support this work.

Just World Festival
February 27, 2009
On February 27th, Annandale High School in Annandale, Virginia hosted a Just World Festival. The Festival is designed to inspire students from around the region to ‘Be the Change You Wish to See in the World'.
For the second year in a row, Barbara was invited to speak about Paper to Pearls and the impact the project is having on the women of northern Uganda. In addition, we participated as a vendor, selling jewelry at reduced prices to allow the students to take home a piece of the story they learned about.
We love these kinds of events—it’s wonderful to spread the word about how making conscious decisions about what you wear or buy can affect the world at large. And it’s great to see students taking interest and action to drive
Crystal Couture
February 16 & 26, 2009
Paper to Pearls was pleased to participate in "Crystal Couture", hosted by the Crystal City, Virginia Business Improvement District. Designed to show-case local businesses and to demonstrate that Crystal City can be a destination for shopping and fun, this fashion event ran two weeks from February 13th until the 28th. Each night featured a different theme—with related fashion shows, trunk shows, décor and refreshments.
Paper to Pearls was a vendor for "Glam Garments Go Green" and "Denim Night". We had a great time, met some wonderful people and sold jewelry for a great cause—definitely what we would call a success. We would like to thank everyone who attended and either bought something or just came to talk about the project, and we would like to thank the BID team for putting together such a creative event! |
